kapnkush608's Grow Op UPDATE 9/2012

Postby kap'nkush608 on Fri Jul 06, 2012 4:26 am

After lurking in the shadows I thought it was about time to introduce myself and my Coral Grow Op. My name is Adam and I'm a reef-a-holic =D> I started using reef some time in January when I bought a t5 and a chunk of frogspawn. It was just a small part of my life then something I used recreationally. Within a few week I began collecting more corals and then parts for a refugium. I was happy for a while and then I set the refugium up chaeto, deep sand bed, and some live rock. That's when it really kicked in and I started getting tank envy for peoples systems (mainly jelly lol) so I began looking around for a larger tank because the 29g wasn't cutting it anymore so I found a 75 for 40 bucks and I started collecting parts.

Then I came across an excellent deal from rvlockhart a 58(?)g drilled and plumbed with a 50 g sump and a mag5 return and stand for $150 and I couldn't resist.

So this is where I came from a 29g with a dual bulb coral life t5 fixture a DIY PVC overflow and PETCO return pump in a DIY refugium and a brs dual reactor and a generic HOB Skimmer with a lil Moddin

I ended up going with the 58 from rvlockhart it was a great deal and ready to be setup the 75 will be set up when we move into a bigger place and collect the pieces to drill and plumb the 75g. I just did a smaller step up to let everything grow for a couple months and slowly add dry rock so its not so empty in the 75

Thanks they love it. They are always out swimming and playing in the current. Without all the great deals from you and some beautiful corals and great advice from jelly I would not have half as nice a tank as I do now.

and this anemone which im assuming is a severely bleached green haddons (corrections anyone?) that my wonderful girlfriend got for our clowns. i want to ensure its survival so any advice would be appreciated. it has been doing well and has colored up a little more. the only thing bad is it dug up my sandbed causing a little cycle and the clowns wont host.

Looking good man. Give the clowns some time they may like your nem and they may hate it lol I had a nem in my old tank and my clowns chose to host the hammer instead lol.

Nice looking tank so far. I'm curious with the nem though. Its hard to know for sure its a haddoni at this point as I cannot see the mouth area etc. But feeding it with tiny chunks of good enriched food or even pinky nail sized shrimp every other day near the mouth will help it bring its life back (zooxanthellae) into it as its severly bleached.

thanks for the kind words and advice. i actually caught one of the clown fish and the rbta the other day and let them bond til the clown was in love. i put them back in the display and for about 3 days it stared at it from a distance and then this morning the carpet took off around the tank and the one clown started goin crazy int it and by the time i got home this morning all three were in the carpet goin nuts.

Had a bleached anemone, white, white, wouldn't even try and stick food. Was the size of a tennis ball, now five yrs later is still going strong and size of basketball. Trick that worked for me: feed 3x a day, small 1/4" or smaller pieces of silversides till it starts to color up, mine took about two -three weeks. Then slowly cut back feedings to once a day, then once a week. Mine eats about once every two weeks, about two silversides, cut into 1/2" pieces.
It is probably healthier to feed it once a week though. And never larger than 1/2" pieces. Oh and a great benefit for you now is your fish will constantly feed it too :D
