it's time to play "Name That Coral!"

Postby asteele on Sun Aug 12, 2012 8:10 pm

I've got a coral that I'm hoping someone can id for me. All we were told upon purchase about 3 years ago was that it was a "UFO." Thanks much for any and all help!

Weird- I didn't think it was a Favia because ours looks so (for lack of a better word) blobby . That sure looks like it though! Thanks!

I agree with Blue2Fyr3 - looks like a favia to me. One of the million different types and colors of favias :)

It's nice to see a whole favia colony. I've mostly seen 4-5 head frags. I hope mine gets that big eventually, they are very slow growing corals.

Congradulations that is an awesom coral, Drs Fosters and Smith called it favia maritima when they had it. I have also seen it called Favia rotundata. Not sure either is accurate. I had that exact same coral for about ten years. I sold hundreds of frags of it. If you feed it alot it will grow very long tentacles and grow agressively. If you do frag it i would love a frag. I will give you a much more expensive acan lord frag or any other frag I have in exchage for a couple of heads. It does grow fast. I bought mine from the big box on Todd Drive for about thirty dollars many years ago.

PM me if you want to make a trade, I have some awesome frags!

I don't really think either of those names are correct. Meisen always called it an unknown favia and he may have just been right, it maybe unnamed. - Mark
