water circulation question???

Postby tattooreef on Wed Jan 16, 2013 6:38 pm

is there such thing as to much water circulation? i have 2 power heads in my 75ga reef tank along with my return from my sump and i've got 2 extra power heads and i was thinking of maybe putting 1 if not both of them in the tank along with the other 2. i was just wondering if it'd be to much . any advise would be helpful. i'm attaching a picture of my tank just so you can see it.

it really depends on what kind of livestock you want to keep.
Also, if you can list the each powerhead's GPH, we can give a more accurate answer.

right now there's 1 clown, blue tang, cardinal fish and 1 other fish along with your typical snails and crabs and there's around 15 different corals in there right now. its mainly just going to be a coral tank. i might put 1 or 2 smaller fish in there, but i plan on adding a lot more corals.

the 2 extra i have are a maxi jet 1200 and a maxi jet 600. not sure how powerful the 2 are that are in there. i just picked them up awhile back used and forgot to ask how big they were. but they seem to be as equally powerful as the other 2

if they are the old maxijets and not the maxijet pros, I'm pretty sure you should be fine putting both in there.
If you want to be cautious, you can always add one powerhead at a time and see how your corals/fish react to it.
If everything looks fine after 1 or 2 weeks, you can add the other one :D

No problem, I've only been in this hobby for almost 1 year only, so not that long either :)

Back to your question, if you use them in the circulation mode (if that's what it's called, dont really remember correctly though) each of the maxijets should be pushing out 1200 or 600 gph depending on the model. You'll want to spread them out to get random flow rather than blasting the corals just from one side. So since you already have 2 on one side, you can put the other 1 or 2 on the side. Hope that helps :)

thanks again. that makes total sense with not blasting the corals from 1 side. i'll put the 600 in 1st tomorrow morning on the other side of the tank facing towards the other 2 powerheads and wait a few weeks and then add the 1200 and see what happens. thanks again for the help. are you going to the frag swap on the 26th? i'll be up there for sure.

what kind of corals do you plan on keeping? LPS or SPS. before you add more flow figure out what you want to keep. lps like a moderate flow while sps like a higher flow.. if you have lps and they are not opening it could be from to much flow. so before you add more figure out what you and then find the middle ground that will make both happy if you go mixed reef

also in stead of adding more split the 2 you have in there already up one on each side and see how the flow looks.. and if you still dont like that then add an other.. you dont want to beat the corals up to much. i have a 180g mixed reef tank and i run 2 mp40s at about half way to 3/4 and it give me more then enough flow my acans dont like it so i have to turn it down. when i had my 45 cube running i had 2 mp10s about 3/4 of and gave me lots of flow.. just had to place lps lower in the tank or the they would get beat up and start to recide and die..

right now i've got some trumpet, hammer, kenya tree, waving zenya, mushrooms , artic ice zoos, a few different polyps, purple sea fan and a few others that i can't remember their names. everything is in the middle of the tank and higher towards the lights. i'm pretty new to saltwater so i'm not sure where everything should be in the tank. i just put it where i thought it looked good. i have the tank in my wall at my tattoo shop for my clients to look at while they get tattooed. i'm always open to have people stop by and give me pointers on what to do and what not to do. if anyone is close to orfordville, you're more than welcome to stop by and check it out and help me out.

I have a hammer and a Kenya in my tank ( among other things ) and I have a 40 breeder. I run around 800gph for return and I also have a koralia 750 and 1050? ( its missing the sticker but its one step up from the 750.) Depending on where the Kenya is it never opens up. The hammer takes a pile of flow and it loves it. Take it for what its worth.

everything is open and seems to be happy. PM me Jelly with your info and a good time to come over. i'm free tomorrow until 2:30. the trumpet is the only one that i don't see anything opening up except for when i feed the tank and put the chemicals in it. then i see some small little hairs come out of it. other than that its just green.
