pH question

Postby creik on Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:53 pm

12 gal reef cube, established for ~9 months, everything looks healthy and is thriving, including simple SPS. AI Nano lighting.
All parameters look good, except my pH makes me wonder:
it is 7.8 at 0800, with only blue LED's on since previous evening, then at 1400, after ~4 hrs of 100% lighting, it is 8.0.
Ca=400, alk=10, phos= minimal, Mg=1400. all others neg.
I know about the CO2 cycling/photosynthesis, etc, so the increase makes sense. My questions:
1. how much fluctuation do others see in pH throughout the day?
2. are my numbers worrisome to others with more experience?
3. If you would make adjustments, what would you do?
Thanks for your thoughts.
Chris

If you are measuring with any non-digital method, likely those numbers aren't accurate/precise enough to matter.

But as for your questions:
1) Sometimes as much as 0.4 during summer (tank runs ~82F, so pH swings are sometimes exaggerated by lots of O2 production). The last couple weeks, the lowest I had was 7.91, highest 8.21.
2) No.
3) Aerate more with outside (of the house, that is) air; plumb in a reverse daylight algae refugium; use a carbonate-weighted alk supplement (rather than one that contains primarily bicarbonate), though be careful dosing that in such a small system.

Honestly, though, if your corals don't seem to care what the pH is, then you shouldn't either. :)

Thanks for your response. They look happy, so therefore I am also, just wondering.....
