Connecting 12V DC LEDs to AC adaptor?

Postby nasanek on Fri Jun 21, 2013 7:49 am

Hi Everyone,
I have a small LED strip that is intended for auto use and I was hoping I could hook it up over my tank. I thought I could just splice it into a little AC adaptor, but this hasn't seemed to work. If I just touch the leads to a 9V battery the LEDs light up just fine. SO, how do I connect this?

Here is an example of what I'm trying to hook up, not the actual thing, but almost identical.

Thanks,
Nick

What voltage and Amperage is the wallwart? I did the same thing for moon lights long ago. If you don't have enough amps they won't light up.

I use this sort of setup for moonlights; works pretty well.

Any wallwart power supply will have enough amperage to drive something like this (though a charger won't, but I don't know that there are too many 12vdc chargers around), so that isn't the issue; these LEDs must draw less than 0.5A. Have you confirmed that the adapter is actually putting out 12vdc? Have you tried connecting the leads with the opposite polarity?

I'd have to check on the specs for the wallwart, but I tried a few different ones. I am certain that one of the adaptors was functional because it still functioned to charge my old cell phone. I do not know that the adaptor was actually putting out 12vDC though. Should I get a voltmeter? I did try switching the polarity, but that didn't seem to help. So, most likely cause is I haven't used the right adaptor? Does that sound reasonable?

Yes, sounds reasonable. You need an actual 12vdc power supply, not a charger. Any 12vdc power supply ought to run that LED strip.

I actually used a charger from a old norelco razor. Every wall wart has to state somewhere on it what it puts out for voltage and amperage.
