product review/selection/experiences

Postby tzenda on Sun Feb 06, 2005 3:38 pm

i just got a couple of 175w metal halide ballast and am tore over which bulb i should get.

i was leaning twards one of these two
10K (13K) 175watt Metal Halide Bulb - Aqualine or
10K 175W Halide Bulb - XM

i am looking for any advice or past experiences to help me choose which one to get, or if anyone knows of another i should get. my balasts are ansi m57 ballast so that limits my bulb selection a bit.

where is the cheapest place to order from

Hi tzenda -

How big of a tank? What are you keeping?
---
I've run 175's for a couple of years now. Generally did the 10k + actinic - and mostly ushio or hamilton. I tried the PFO 13k [nice color, but not enough light for acropora IMO], and the 10k xm which I was happy with. With pc actinics they were ok, probably would like vho actinics better. Without supplimentation, IMO, 10k can be a bit yellow.

I tended to feel the xm didn't look as nice later in it's life, where the ushio didn't seem to change as much over the `long haul' ... but I liked those.

Upgrading to 250, one is in already. Partly due to the fact there's a LOT more info on 250w MH's than anything else - and I like to look at output, which for 175's is hard to find if anything.

We have run 3 different 175w bulbs and i'll give my thought on all of them.

1) Ushio-(Old Style Bulb)- Good bulb, a little yellow, but all in all, a good quality bulb with a good track record plus good PAR #'s. Bad part is, the new style 175w Ushio will not run on M57 ballasts, so that one is out.

2) AB 10k(13k)- I little 'whiter' than the Ushio with the ever so slightest touch of blue. Seems to be a good bulb.

3) XM 20k- Blue, and if the numbers for 175w follow the 250w, PAR is really low. For us, not a concern as it's softies and LPS, both seem to really like them. If you don't like the 'Blue' look, these aren't for you.
