What type of salt does everyone use?

Postby Blue2Fyr3 on Mon Dec 15, 2014 11:06 am

I've been using reef crystals from the beginning but the ALK is always too high so I'm looking to switch.

Tanks are as follows:

34g mixed reef, mostly softies and SPS
Weekly 10% water changes

8g macros and NPS
weekly 50% water changes

I have no problem dosing 2 part as needed.

I use ReefCrystals. From what I have read online, ReefCrystals was adjusted to have a lower alkalinity when prepared to natural sea water levels (1.0264). I tested my current batch, mixed to 1.0264, and had ~8dKH for alkalinity, which is where I try to keep my tank. I haven't had any issues with ReefCrystals in over 10 years of using it, but it's important to measure key levels on each new batch to make sure it is where you expect it to be (this is true for any salt mix, in my opinion).

Hmmm

I wonder do I just have a bad batch. My Alk is always around 10-12

Would getting something like Instant ocean and dosing to what I want it to be, be beneficial?

I used to mix 50/50 Reef Crystals/Oceanic to help with that. But Oceanic has become harder to find.

I use Instant Ocean. I just checked the kH in my wc vat, and it is 11 (@35ppt). I dose sodium carb in the topoff water (prob about 1/4 cup of sodium carb per week in a 90g) to maintain a target of 11dKH.

If a system is maintaining 10-12 dKH without additional intentional carbonate inputs on just 10% weekly water changes, I'd suspect bad source water, bad test kit, or very high salinity. It would be very unlikely that a system at 10dKH could be raised to 12dKH using only 10% wcs with any commercially produced salt.

Hmm maybe my test kit has gone bad. I'll have to check it for an expiration date.

Salinity is at 1.025 constant due to my ATO
I also use RO/DI for water changes but I haven't tested the TDS in a while. I might be due for a filter change.
Calcium was around 450 the last time I tested
I don't have a Mag test so I haven't tested that one.

Thanks for the input!

I use Reef Crystals but also have used Oceanic with a problem. Like Oceanic in the big 7/8 gallon buckets which I saved to use for water changes.

I will use Reef Crystals or Seachem Reef Salt. Whichever is cheapest shipped to my door from liveaquaria.com. I can't relate to your problem because I have no problems with high alk ever because my system absorbs it so quickly. I don't see any problem with an alk of 10 but 12 is pushing it. Lowest alk I have ever seen in a salt is Oceanic at about 7-8

DD's H2Ocean Magnesium Pro Plus. It's the only salt I've had actual decent growth with SPS's long term and the color is phenomenal compared to others.

Although you have to take into mind that there are numerous things that effect our small ecosystems. Lighting, water quality and volume, proper nutrient export and all of that stuff.
