I've created an algae bloom

Postby Brad_608 on Sat Mar 05, 2005 6:14 am

well it would seem that adding a skimmer a 400w MH and an RO all in the same weekend has resulted in great growth of green algae on the glass and some on the rocks

I'm currently adjusting the live stock in the algae eating area I got rid of my yellow tang a couple months ago and boy do I miss him , but am getting a blue regal soon , just thought the yellow was to plain for the tank .

I thought with adding the RO my algae problems would be almost
non-existent

but the light seems to be the culprit

any ideas on straightening out the problem
I'm unemployable Yeah

How long are you running your lights and what did you do to acclimate your tank to them? Yes, more than likely, the llights are the problem.
Just a girl trying to create a little bit of heaven on earth, without killing it :)

What kind of light?

IMO, the nutrients didn't come from the skimmer or RO - but the light just gave them more `juice' so you see them more.

Great question above on how you acclimated things to the light - also wonder if a newer skimmer isn't fully broken-in or `perfectly tuned' yet - leaving a little more nutrient in-tank than will be or normally is?

Just thinking out loud ...

light is a 400w mh 20k radium switched once in a while with a ushio 10k

acclimated lights from about 30" down to 10" in about three weeks

didn't mean to say that the skimmer or RO are to blame
