Frag Swap?

Postby meisen on Thu Apr 07, 2005 7:33 am

I was wondering....is there any group interest in a Southern Wisconsin frag swap this spring/summer? We could maybe invite WRS to participate as well as the Chicago club (CMAS). I think we can get a place to do it, two or three workable venues spring to mind and it shouldnt be too difficult to solicit donations from a couple stores for a raffle or two. I was thinking low-key, like 2-3 hours on a Sunday afternoon or early evening. Probably 20+ people would make it worthwhile.

I was thinking June or July, does everyone go on vacation though?

If response is favorable, is there anyone who would be interested in helping me to organize (not my strong point lol)? Probably main things to do would 1. secure venue, date, time 2. try and solicit a few auction items 3. publicize it.

I'd be happy to help and/or attend! Maybe we could make a couple bucks to help defray some website costs.

Yeah I was thinking the exact same thing....maybe ask for 5.00 @ door to put a chunk into helping defray the costs a little.

Not a bad idea - although mid-summer might pose some heat issues [depending on venue] at least for those who have to trave to come to it.

But - I'm all gung-ho for it - though perhaps a date would be good to know a few months in advance? I'd rather get stuff cut, encrusted, growing ideally before a swap ... and that takes time.

WRS, CMAS, and the Fox Valley folks are great ideas - even if a carload from each club - they'd add to it IMO.

I know Dr. Foster/smith is trying for a frag-swap/etc this August up in Rhinelander ... they have space, items for a raffle-thing, and have contacted WRS + MN groups about it. Something to consider ... though having our own IMO would be even more ideal.

With IMAC in June ... + a meeting ... might be too much. Seems like attendance [MARS, WRS] is normally lower in the summer + something to think about.

That said, great idea and let me know if I can help. Would gladly make up flyers for it, write an email to WRS [where I'm a member] about it - just let me know if/how I could help :)

I could help spread the word up north :)... I live in Stevens Point Wisconsin but know quite a few die hard aquarists :)

We might want to try for July. Heat issues - but if Drs. F & S is having an event in August, they might help us out if we promote their event the following month. Plus, it gives us time to get ready, people to get their frags ready, and it's not TOO far away. Of course, neither is winter...

Speaking of Fosters & Smith, I just saw on their main etropicals.com web site that they are constructing an aquaculturing facility in Rhinelander. They claim it will be operational this Spring.

I wonder if they will be giving tours at their August event.

Yeah I met and spoke with two of the folks who are running the aquaculture end of Fosters and Smith.

Well, I am leaning towards June for temperture and vacation considerations.

I will start to look for a venue and post on the other boards as long as no one has any objections (I know MARS is kind of decentralized and all but there must be some powers that be, right?).

So anyone else have any comments or questions?

I hope this is `cool' to post here, but I was emailed this from the WRS list a while ago regarding the Dr.'s deal. Just throwing it out there, but if folks are interested in going - I am as well.

I'm even more interested in a frag swap of our own, glad Meisen got this ball rolling.

Eric,
I am proud to announce that Drs. Foster and Smith are gearing up to host our
first annual Wisconsin Frag Swap. We would like to invite you and your club
members to participate and join us for this inaugural event which is
scheduled for Saturday, August 6th and Sunday, August 7th. I have already
spoken with Jim Grassinger of the Greater Minnesota Reef Society on Friday
March 25th and he is very enthusiastic about this event.

The goal of this frag swap is to bring together hobbyists and professionals
in order to trade, sell, and swap coral frags, as well as learn and exchange
ideas among one another. The plans are to have various activities scheduled
throughout the weekend in addition to the Frag Swap itself. There will be
speaker sessions from some of the industry's most respected professionals
who will cover various subjects pertaining to Aquaculture, the hobby, and
other relevant topics. There will be booths of vendors who will display
their products and provide samples to the attendees, and we will provide
tours of both our new aquaculture coral facility as well as our hard good
pet supplies call center and distribution center. Raffles will be
incorporated throughout the weekend with some magnificent prizes, and lunch
will be catered courtesy of Drs. Foster & Smith for all participants of this
event. We will also have some of the more popular cleanup crew items as
well as supplies available for purchase at a discounted price at our Retail
Outlet Store.

We are hoping to obtain a commitment from you and your club to support and
attend this inaugural event. In return, we would donate ALL proceeds from
the raffles to both the Wisconsin Reef Society and Greater Minnesota Reef
Society. The plan is to have 30 or more prizes ranging from gift
certificates, reef supplies, lighting/filtration, along with a grand prize.
The grand prize we are working on is a complete aquarium, stand/canopy,
lighting, and filtration system that will be delivered to the winners home.
I really think this will be an ideal way for all of the reef enthusiasts in
Wisconsin and surrounding areas to come together and have a great time!

Our plans will be finalized and more details will be forwarded on to you in
the next few weeks. A thread on Reef Central will also be started in the
coming weeks in order to invite all hobbyists and enthusiasts to participate
in this event. I look forward to hearing back from you on your thoughts,
and I will explain all of the details. Please feel free to contact me
directly by email at kkohen@liveaquaria.com or by phone at (715) 361-9464
when time permits with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you.

Ok,

Some updates, seems like things are coming along. I still feel like we need a little more interest here before we go to all the trouble. Will people just tag or post if they would come to this if we do it?

We have a venue that Steve was good enough to check into for us so that part is taken care of. He also offered to host a planning meeting for those that are interested. Anyone else in on that?

-I think despite June being sort of reef heavy, it makes more sense as so many folks will be away/busy in July not to mention how hot it will be.

-Schedules put it between June 12th and June 19th. Any thoughts?

-I was thinking 2-4 pm but probably something to be discussed

-Would we want to consider this swap the MARS meeting for June? Maybe we have our meeting first and then follow it up with the frag swap?

Thanks for posting that Mark, I will definitely plan a trip to Rhinelander for that one!!!! We can talk carpooling and such in a month or three ;)

As long as folks dont feel like it will be too much trading and fragging between the two swaps, I am still down with "a swap of our own".
