WTB Frags

Postby Powwer on Wed Jul 13, 2005 10:00 pm

I just got my new 75gal cycled and im looking for some frags to get me started. I have been doing Fish mainly tanks and now I have decided to go reef. I really have no idea on what to get but I was looking at Hammers, Toadstools, Leathers, Ricordia YUMA, and other things because I cant remeber theres names at this time. So im looking for anything you guys can offer and we can talk.

Current setup:
75GAL
4-40 watt 6500k
2-40 watt attinics (spelling)
I have a tank cover thats why I went with old school bulbs cause heat issues.

So please any PM or replyes about corals or frags of corals and we can talk from there.

If you have nothing yet I would suggest coming to the August meeting. Frequently people have starter frags to give away or sell cheap. Plus it is a great way to meet others with experience.

Hi - I can hook you up with some pretty easy stuff - I've got lots of pulsing xenia, kenya trees, and yellow polyps. Good things to get started with.

Are you using regular flourescent bulbs? I don't know if anything can grow with that minimal amount of light. I would read about lighting and corals on wetwebmedia.com. You can learn a great deal on that website. N

I have been able to keep the corals that I have had in the past with Flourescent bulbs. Beside before PC and other new types of light they were able to grow corals without using metal halide. I do agree that ATM my lighting is a little low but I do plan on switching to 3' 30watt bulbs and cutting ahole in canopy for a metal halide.

That's true things did grow with the older lighting but people were pretty limited on what they could grow. And "grow" might be an optimistic word also. "Sustain" might be a better word.

You don't necessarily HAVE to have MH lights either. I've got 220 watts of PC lights on my 75g and have had good luck with things so far but I wouldn't want to have anything less either. You'll just have to be careful what you buy, keep things higher up in the tank and maybe keep your photo period longer. I'd make a lighting upgrade soon if you'd like to see things prosper and get some nice color.

As Nancy said, there are lots of resources out there to research lighting and coral lighting requirements or come to a meeting if you have questions.

Good luck,
Steve
