Here's more info, I think the story I passed on earlier was fluffed up for effect. It still seems like a problem though.

Here's a Canadian website that talks about safety concerns:

Here's the original article that looks like the Fox News article is based on:

How to dispose of them:

Not only that, the luminace value is way to low for adequate room lighting.

Here is what the Wisconsin DNR has to say about CF bulbs:

1. DNR posts information about compact fluorescent lamps

DNR has revised the page for fluorescent and other light bulbs under the "How Do I Handle My Waste?" section of the Waste and Materials Management website. In response to the increasing attention on compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), the page contains more information specifically about CFLs, their benefits and proper disposal methods. We have added links to publications from DNR, Focus on Energy and EPA that deal specifically with CFLs and other bulbs that contain hazardous materials.

DNR encourages the use of CFLs and other efficient lighting for their energy-saving benefits, but also strongly encourages that these bulbs be recycled, even if the manufacturer has labeled them "green."

You can view the updated page at:
