Alright pet shop junkies decor ideas wanted.....

Postby spbreeder on Mon Sep 24, 2007 11:40 am

My 7 year old and 3 year old are sharing a pretty small room that has bunk beds and have decided they want a "pet shop"room.

My ideas thus far... a dog bed for the pup, a cat climbing thingy (we have 2 cats), a betta in a bowl, putting some shelves up with 10 gal aquariums and have some real animals and some fake, such as a couple of hermit crabs. maybe one with a fake iguana or other kind of lizard, I also have an empty 29 gal. tall I was thinking about decorating to look like a reef tank. I figure you all have spent some fair time in pet shops, do you have any ideas to make it look more authentic without busting the bank of mom?

How about painting the walls or getting some wallpaper that looks like a fish tank. I know at fish stores they sell those cheesy backing for tanks that have a picture of corals or plants on them.

You could also get them lots of Stuffed animals and buy some chicken wire at Home depot to make cages for them. A roll of chicken wire is like 10 -20 dollars.

Just my 2 cents. Ill keep thinking

How about a life-sized cutout of Meisen since he's always at the LFS?

You could always tear out their wall and put in a 500g reef. I think that may just break the budget though :)

That 29g could always make a fun lightly stocked FOWLR, and do minimal rock and livestock to keep the cost down.

Funny Steve.

I was just thinking about the walls, not sure what to do. There are no pet stores up here, probably have to go to LaCrosse or Eau Claire. Also, what to do with the bunk beds. I was trying to think of a way to make them look like big cages or aquariums, but I am not sure how to do that.

We stayed at Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan a few months ago and one of the things they feature is a "Kid Aquarium Suite". They are pretty cool and this may give you some ideas...

I was thinking that if you wanted to "enclose" the bunkbeds you could use blue colored drapery sheers - might give you that underwater look. Plus it would be kindof like a fort! (my favorite when i was a kid!)

some of my jobs have been painting kids theme rooms, I could help you if you wanted, maybe we could swap work for fish/corals/equipment, just a thought. I have a really cool book on finding nemo, would have more of a cartoon edge to it. That aquarium suite was cool too.

Sue, that is a great idea, I can't count how many times we have had to make forts with blankets and chairs, I bet they would love that.

Renee, I am kind of wanting to stay away from the cartoon thing, Evan wants a "pet shop" not just fish. I do appreciate the offer, also I don't have a tank set up right now  (someday  ) so not much to trade. When it come times to actually painting I will let you know if I have any questions though, thanks for the idea,

Ummm I dont even know what to say to that. I think it would probably scare spbreeders kids out of their minds.
