HD-DVD...........Bye Bye!

With Warner Bros. switching over to Bluray exclusively, that just leaves Paramount and Universal to ditch HD-DVD (which are rumored to be going 'Blu' in coming months). Hope you all didn't buy HD-DVD players. :D

For some people out there that have converted their movie collection to DVD, why bother get blu-ray or even HD? Just think of the cost converting again.

Phooey

Just get yourself an upconverting DVD player for the regular DVD's. Still not the same quality as Bluray, but better than standard DVD. Then, get yourself a Bluray player and start collecting Bluray DVD's. :D Problem solved!

Sony also claimed that BETA was blowing away VHS in the tape market. That was true until the adult film makers went with VHS. That could still happen with HD.

I could be wrong, but I think a lot of the blu-ray and HD-dvd players have the HD Upscaling built in for standard DVDs. I've got an upconverting player and I love it, even older movies look quite a bit better scaled up to 1080i :)

I would doubt that we'll see a blu-ray peripheral for the 360...but I guess anything is possible. I'm holding off on purchasing anything until either the power shifts settle out and both formats find equal support, or a clear winner emerges. That, and sufficient funding finds its way to my bank account.

Toshiba released their official announcement today:

Oh well - at least I will have a nice upconverting DVD player and 10 free HD-DVD movies. I guess price isn't everything because the HD-DVD players were much less than the Bluray. I will be waiting a while for the Bluray prices to come down before buying one.

There are rumors that a lower priced PS3 is coming out in spring...that should get some people to buy into the format

The lower price ps3 is probably going to be the $300 one from this past xmas season, since it came out just before thanksgiving and then they discontinued it just after xmas. Personally I would not buy a ps3 as a blue ray player if you have a reciever that can handle the True HD audio formats, that require a v1.3a HDMI port and cable to transfer the sound. The ps3 is only v1.2b. That being said True HD audio formats probably don't have relevance on about 95% of the market who will be buying a ps3. Also the ps3 does upscale the video of dvd's to 1080i, which is nice.
