Go into the device manager. Go into the drive. Go to the properties tab - make sure that 'Enable digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device' is checked.

Sometimes setting get changed by who knows what - driver updates, windows automatic updates. I have had this problem myself, so you may want to check that setting - if you haven't already.

Another thing to check would be the Windows volume settings, maybe something got muted/turned down inadvertently at some point.

Honestly I don't know where to access the "Device Manager." I was looking in the control panel.

Here is how to get there:
From the Start menu - click on My Computer - on the top left click on View System Information - click on the Hardware tab - click on Device Manager - double click on your DVD/CD drive - go to the properties tab - make sure that 'Enable digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device' is checked.
Hope this helps in finding it.

Did you get a new computer\used, or did you move the computer and jar the cable?
It may be possible that your drive audio cable got disconnected from the sound card or area of the motherboard where your sound card is. I would suggest reseating the cable at both the sound card end and the drive end.
Here is a sample of what I am talking about (specifically the blue cable between the sound card and the drive)

and here is what the cable itself looks like

If this is the problem, you can prove it by playing a store bought cd and you should not hear sound, yet if you dump an mp3 on a cd and play it you will hear it fine.
