FREE MANTIS SHRIMP

Postby LIVINGART on Wed Apr 14, 2010 10:34 am

We need to make some space and have a 3" mantis shrimp that is available for free to a good home.

How aggressive are they? Would he fight with the purple lobster?

We keep these guys in solitary confinement!
They kill anything that moves, which is entertaining depending on the type of person you are.
With out a doubt one of the most underrated interesting/hardy inverts out there.

I love calamari, but felt bad for that blue-ring.

I cringed when I saw that. I've always wished I could have an enclosed inescapable bio-cube or something with a blue-ring in it. To see one get decimated by a wicked shrimp was like, WHOA.

Still have that guy? What size tank would he need to live all on his own?

Hey Paul,

That isn't one of my stray N. wennerae still hanging around, is it?

Mantis are truly amazing creatures. Nearly fearless; I have a smallish (2" or so) Neogonodactylus wennerae still in my tank that hitchhiked in on my liverock. I was cleaning algae today and he didn't hesitate to attack the toothbrush I was cleaning the rocks with. Needless to say I'm cautious when putting bare skin near the rocks where he lives.

Jen, if you're interested in keeping a mantis species tank, in addition to Paul's excellent advice I'd also recommend looking at the Mantis Shrimp subforum on Reef Central. You'll find information from Dr. Roy Caldwell, a leading mantis biologist, well worth reading for anyone who wants to keep a mantis.

Cheers,

Glen

Jen,
The mantis would do fine in a 10-20gal. tank and yes we still have it available for free.
It's around 3" and healthy as a horse.

Glen,
Thanks for the info. It sounds like you've become a bit of a mantis expert yourself!

I saw this beast the other day -- very cool! More personality than most people I've met. I regret not taking it home with me...
