Fish Room / Tank Build 180 gallon #2

Postby cpandrewschmidt on Sat Mar 12, 2011 7:18 pm

Well, we're back at it again. After moving my 180 gallon from my old house I've started working on the new room in the new house. The basement is unfinished right now. So, naturally before actually finishing the useful part of the basement I'm making room for the tank! It's going to be viewed from two sides. From the front you'll see it from the "theater room" then on the skinny side I'll have a bar and while you sit there you can see in.

My biggest worry was evaporation and keeping the moisture away from the rest of the house. I'm using all green board for moisture resistance and I'll put a vapor barrior on the inside of the room to trap the air. I have a humidity controlled vent that will turn a fan on when the moisture reaches whatever relative humidity I decide. This was important because my furnance is in the basement. My last house the tank was also located where the furnace was and I ran into mold problems because my furnace was pumping all the moisture into the rest of the house. Hopefully this elminates that.

So, onto pictures, I've been at it for two weekends now:

Before (plumbing already in which I had to move to make room for the back wall)

This weekend I hung drywall on the exterior and got rough electrical in. So, now you can really see it take shape. To the left where my tank is now is roughly where the bar area will be. My goal is to have a "man" basement. To my surprise the wife is ok with all of this so far.

I'd guess I'll have another solid month or more before the tank can go in. I'm going to replace my current 180 gallon with a new one so I can coustomize my own overflow box. I want to have an "island" of rocks on the left of the tank where you can see in front and back of them from the bar area to see all the way to the other side of the tank. So, if anyone knows of somewhere they sell 180 gallons w/out overflows for cheap let me know!

Thanks for looking, more to come.

Well, can finally give a bit of an update. Last few weeks were spent finishing up the electrical and getting the humidity fan in; and then mudding and tapping, which takes the most time. Finally got primer and paint on. Primer only on the outside as the final paint coat won't come till the rest of the basement is done. One more coat of paint inside then its onto the floor and then building the stand. And then the fun stuff, tank! Still need to track down a 180 gallon tank. Im waiting for some sales for that. If anyone knows of a good place to get one let me know. Looking for one that is not reef ready as I'm doing my own overflows. So, onto the pics:

Thanks for looking, hopefully more updates soon.

Time for some updates. Tile floor down, stand built, and Beananimal style overflow started. Tank hopefully next week!

overflow. drilling glass was a bit tricky at first but I got the hang of it. Still have 3 more holes when the tank arrives.

Looking forward to getting some plumbing going and filling with water!

Finally done! For the most part. Trim, etc will come when the rest of the basement is done, maybe in 5 years...

Wife getting a creepy pic of me and my brother. I'm not weird, really. Filling the new tank

Scary/creepy brittle star, like 15 inches across, going in the sump in this tank. i think its been responsible for a mandrin death

Coral in, lights on. Island side. Still need some putty to cover a little PVC, all in all it covered very nicely. I drilled holes in rock and stacked it.

I did loose a 6 line wrasse for some reason. Not sure why, might have just been old age and the quick move stressed him. Had him for about 7 years, bummer. Picked up 2 sandsifting gobies that started eating sand today! Need some more snails and probably a replacement wrasse. Looking at a red coris and maybe another 6 line, or something a little cooler looking. All in all I'm very happy with it! Nice open feel but still plent of hiding spots.

Thanks for looking,

Nice look, good move not having too much rock. I did my 180 last year, wish I had put in less rock. It is nice when the fish have more room to swim.
