UV Sterilizers

Postby BraenDead on Wed Jun 11, 2014 3:26 pm

I am contemplating adding a UV sterilizer to my system, to help prevent algae from spreading, cut down on fish disease, improve water clarity, etc. It's something I've always considered but have never run in the various years keeping a tank. I'm curious to hear thoughts on these questions:

- Do you run a UV Sterilizer, why or why not?
- If you do run a UV Sterilizer, what brand and model? I have about 150g total volume, 75g display tank
- If you do run UV, how often do you change the bulbs? Do you run the UV 24x7?
- If you do run UV, what is your flow and how do you provide flow to the UV unit? I'm debating using gravity feed from my display drains, but I'm not sure how to measure the gph, since most units have a defined gph range.

If there's anything else I may not be thinking of, share away! Thanks,

Bob

I had ran one a couple years ago due to a algae bloom. Cleaned things up amazing. Mine was a cheap no name one off eBay. One thing to keep in mind is you want low flow to increase contact time. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck.

Tickle, out of curiosity why did you get rid of it or stop running it?

I sold that tank when I moved and went with a larger one and kept none of the equipment. I have thought about getting another sterilizer again though. Mine was a spiral variety and I powered it with a cheap $10 pump I found. If I remember correctly I think it was intended for outdoor pond use.

Had some glass algae and brown in the sand problems. Was thinking about getting a uv unit. Instead I built an algae scrubber. It's amazing how well they work. So easy to make.
